Excerpt from I DREAM OF AMY

On this cold December morning, here's some hot cocoa for your imagination: a snippet from my January 2011 release, I DREAM OF AMY!

It was just a mouthful of ice cream. No, less.

And it had fallen right on her right breast.

Jonah watched with keen interest. He knew it wasn’t gentlemanly, that he would have been wise to avert his eyes. Still, he watched as she captured the ice cream on her finger, then captured it from there with a flick of her tongue.

Be a good host, have your ice cream, and get to bed. All in that order, without time for his body rising to the occasion all because of one little wardrobe/food malfunction. Maybe she hadn’t noticed that he’d noticed that innocently sensual action that had just occurred.

But that wasn’t the case there. Jonah’s eyes met Amanda’s.

Amy’s eyes. She said you could call her Amy.

What’s in a name? Shakespeare had said that. Not that he’d read anything more of Shakespeare’s works than Romeo and Juliet, required reading for junior high school, which he’d attended forever ago. Everybody knew Shakespearean quotes, though. Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou? To thine own self be true. All the world’s a stage.

What’s in a name? Also from Romeo and Juliet. Funny, but a name did change things. A name presented obstacles. Or possibilities. One name could be mysterious and elusive, even glamorous.

Like Amanda.

The other could be intimate and even homespun. That was the girl next door who, given a chance, could be even more enticing than the girl on the cover on the magazine cover.

Like Amy.

Staring directly into his eyes, she slowly lifted a spoonful of Delight, brought it closer to her body, and then she flipped the spoon over. That sent an even bigger creamy dollop, chocolate chip bits and all, plunging to her left breast. Amy’s grin was seductive.

“Ooops again. Wanna get that for me?”

She was flirting with him. He was better at being gentlemanly, and that might have come as a surprise to her, than at flirting. He reached for a napkin from the wooden holder on the table and started handing it to her. That would have taken care of that, effectively closing the door on the whole flirtation thing. Why start something with a woman who wasn’t going to hang around long enough for anything real to start? She was going back to her own world as soon as those roads were passable.
But she wanted to start something.

And so did he....

Oh, no, not J-Lo again!

Totally off-topic here, but am I the only one who finds Jennifer Lopez to be one of the most annoying, overrated "stars" out there?

I realize that she really rocks some people's boats, too. For me, my fascination with her began and ended with her performance in Selena, the film that depicted the life of the lovely Latina singer who met a tragic end. True, I'm also a Latina, but that's not the reason I find Selena to have been J-Lo's only palatable character.

Most of the time when she's playing a role, it's hard to forget that Jennifer Lopez is, well, playing a role. It's like she's from the "Look, Ma, I'm in a movie!" School of Acting. And though I DO enjoy some of her music (which seems to have gotten better after she married Marc Anthony), I don't consider her a terrific singer. Let's add dancer in there, too. She's okay, but I don't think Broadway's going to be calling her to choreograph anything anytime soon.

I write this because I was channel-surfing yesterday and came across one of her movies. Don't ask me which one. I can tell you it wasn't that Eeeeek! horror she did with Ben Affleck, Giggly or Giglia or whatever it was called, though. She's there being cutesy and squealing. She's very good at both, I'll admit, but there's just so much cutesy and squealing I, personally, can take. I mention to my husband, "Oh, no, not J-Lo again." The hubby doesn't mind her, but of course he adds, "Hey, she was great as Selena!"

I rest my case.

Oh, and then this morning I'm checking email, and there she is in a shot with a strange-looking Tom Cruise (wearing a fat outfit, I guess?). It appears she was a hit on the MTV Awards. Does anybody still watch those? From the looks of the picture, she looked pretty good in some outfit she was wearing, although she looks like she was being cutesy and squealing again.

Only this time, she was doing it to music.

So, if you're a J-lo fan, I apologize for dissing your girl, but sorry, I ain't sold on her at all!

Later,
Kira

More books coming up!

Hey! Considering my last post was on May 6, I definitely need to step up to the plate and start posting more. My only excuse is that I've been writing, writing, writing. I'm waiting to hear back on NIGHT & DAY, a paranormal that takes place in the late 1940s, with a hero who's a private eye (think Philip Marlowe!) with a supernatural secret.

And also coming soon: I'm excited to announce that I'll be offering a hot new novella on Lulu this month. So check back soon for details!

Coming Soon!

My new website! Hopefully in the next few weeks. Sheesh, it took me this long just to figure out how to change the background in Blogger!

In the meantime I'm at work on my next WIP, which I hope will be done by early next month. If you liked COOKING WITH FIRE, hope you look forward to seeing NIGHT & DAY soon!

Till next time,
Kira

Yes, I know--grammatically, you're not supposed to use three of these thingies !!! in punctuation. But it's okay if it denotes great excitement. :D

I sold another book (well, actually, a romantic spanking novella) entitled COOKING WITH FIRE. You can sample the first chapter at Bethany's Woodshed.

And now off to my next WIP!
